1.1 What is lower back pain?
Among the 100 million people worldwide who complain about chronic pain every year the most common complaint is low back pain. In the United States alone 80% of the population will experience low back pain at some time in their lifetime. It is the second most frequent reason for doctor visits, next to the common cold, and it is a leading cause of job-related disabilities.The lower back starts just below the rib cage and is called the lumbar region. Lumbar means “pertaining to the abdominal segment of the torso between the diaphragm and the sacrum”.
The five lumbar vertebrae in the lumbar region of the back are the largest and strongest in the spinal column. The spinal cord terminates between vertebrae one and two of the series which is called L1 and L2. In between each lumbar vertebra, there is a nerve root and these nerve roots come together to form the largest single nerve in our bodies called the sciatic nerve.
