Dealing with problem employees. A lot of times there's an employee out there, and they're not functioning at the level. They could be, they could be so much better, but they're just not performing at that level. Or their true problem employee seems like they're always causing problems. They're not getting things done. They're screwing up.

They're causing challenges for other people. You may even have to pay somebody or grab some other staff and have them come over and have them fix some of these challenges that these people are causing. So when dealing with quote unquote, problem employees, we need to determine first and foremost, are they problem employees, or are they employees with problems? Let me share with you exactly how that works. So the first part is to figure out what is the actual problem. Now there's an old medical Maxim, it simply states proper diagnosis is half the cure.

If you're a medical doctor, and you know that the problem, the diagnosis is that this person has a broken leg, you automatically know what to do to solve that problem. If they're just having pain in their leg, oh, it could be dozens of things. So until you properly diagnose it, you can't take any action and you're stuck. So in business, the first thing that we want to do is diagnose what's causing the problem. Once we know that action will immediately flow from it. We'll take the right steps to solve it.

So here's your list of ways to diagnose the problem. Problem employees are always having problems. In one of these three areas, so this is how you diagnose it. If the employee has an attitude problem, they've got a bad attitude. And that's why they're not moving forward. And that's why they're disturbing other staff members.

You just need to fire them. I'm a therapist. I've got over 30 years in the field. I don't try to do enough therapy to change people's attitudes. Those are ingrained, literally from birth. It would take you years to make a complete attitudinal shift in somebody.

You don't want to spend the time the money or the resources, fire him, rehire somebody else. And when you hire, hire for attitude over aptitude. Why? Because attitude, like we just said, can't be changed. aptitude, which is just skill sets can be developed, they can be learned, they can be increased, that we can adjust. Remember that old phrase, always hire attitude over aptitude, too.

Sometimes the person can't do the task, or they're not performing at the level they should be. Because they simply don't have the skills. They haven't been taught. They don't have the training. So what do you do with that person? train them, give them the skills, give them additional training, give them some coaching, walk them through the process, maybe have somebody mentor with them, and then boom, problem solved.

Proper diagnosis leads to proper action. Perfect. Three resources. You tell your assistant, hey, go and make me three copies of this. And you go out to lunch, you come back, it's an hour, hour and a half later, and you say, where's my copies? Oh, I'm sorry.

I couldn't get you the copies. Now you got to look at what's the problem? Is it an attitude problem. They're thinking to have With him or her, I don't want to get those copies for you. Why should I have to rush around for you? Is it a skills or training issue?

They went over to the copier. And you said, I need this double sided. They'd never made a double sided copy before. And they didn't know how to do it. In that case, you're not going to get your copies. But number three that we're talking about right now is about resources.

The resources mean, they went to the copier, and the copier was out of paper. It was out of toner. He was broken. There was 23 other people in line. You don't have enough copiers. So if they don't have the right resource, they can't do the job.

In virtually every instance where you have a problem employee, it's going to be one of these three. So this system, write this down. Put this in your notes. This will teach you quickly, simply and easily. Both how to diagnose it. How to solve it.
