DESCRIPTION: Leucine is an essential amino acid used in the biosynthesis of proteins. Leucine is an essential amino acid because it cannot be synthesised de novo (from new) in human cells from a precursor compound. It must be ingested from other plants and microorganisms which synthesize leucine from pyruvic acid. Figure 1 below shows the biosynthesis pathway of leucine.
