DESCRIPTION: During a casting breakdown, a type is given based on different categories: job title, personality traits, race, and age range. Think about one of your favorite actors. Do you think he/she has a type? Of course, they do! For example, one of my favorite actors is Jason Bateman. If you were to look over his course of work, you would notice that he tends to play the straight comedic guy that holds a job title of a businessman. His personality trait tethers between a kind guy with a huge heart and a pretentious jerk with sarcastic remarks. In his case, being typecast works for his benefit because he gets the job. In his exact words, “People say: ‘Why do you want to play the straight man?’ Well, “it’s because he gets to be in every scene.” This brings me to my next point of why understanding your type is so important.
