So it's also possible to import video files into Lightroom. And I'd like to demonstrate this now I've got a little video clip sitting on my desktop here of this crazy chaotic traffic scene in the streets of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. And I'm just going to import that in. It's about a 22nd clip. So I'm going to go back to Lightroom. I'm going to click Import.

And I'm going to navigate my way to my desktop where that clip is sitting. And I'm just going to choose Add, so it stays where it is. I'm just going to add it to the catalog without moving or copying or anything, just going to do regular size previews and just apply my metadata template there. I need to worry about too much else there. And I go ahead my quick input. So in comes my clip right there.

So initially, it just comes in as a little thumbnail, as you'd expect, just as any other image would. So referencing the desktop there. If I go into loop view, I get this little playback option here. So if I go ahead and click play, you can see my video plays through. So maybe I'll just take that volume down a little bit more for you. I hope that's not too loud.

But it's, I think it adds to the chaos to hear all that going on is the place struggled with directed traffic going in all directions. So that's my little 22nd clip sitting here in Lightroom. So what else can I do to this little clip? Well, there's a few things I can do. I can, there's a couple of little icons down here that enable me to, I can capture a frame, if I want to lift a frame out of a let's say I go. So I can just scroll through.

It's fun. And that's, I like that frame. There. We can see the lots of people's faces coming through all the sort of chaos. So I'm just going to click there. And I'm going to say, capture frame, and Lightroom.

Now when I get back to grid view, you'll see occasionally I get this little lag when I go to back to grid from loop. There's little Have a leg sign now here's my video and here's just a single frame that I've lifted from it. So if I wanted to jump into if I wanted to jump into my Develop module, you can see this is just a, I've just lifted a photo from that frame. So it just comes in as a JPEG file. And I could go ahead and you know, make adjustments to it and add some this and add some that and do whatever I want. So it lifting frames from video is that easy.

I'm just going to go back to library now and I'm going to just go into loop view again on my video. I can also from this same little icon here I can set the poster frame. So what the setting the poster frame is basically setting the frame that is used for the preview in the grid. So let's find an interesting frame again. I'm just going to pull my little slider there maybe that just gets to get the placement in so nice. Yeah, and that's kind of captures the chaos quite nicely there.

So lysate sets at the four second mark into the video. If I say set poster frame, that now becomes the frame that is used in grid view here. So that will always be the frame so it can play back and forth just by scrolling on it. But when I move off, it jumps back to that four second in poster frame. So that's some stuff we can do as well. Now I can trim this video, if I double click to go back to live view, I can say so this 22nd video, often when you shoot video, there's a bit of extra stuff at the start or the end that you don't want.

So I can bring my playhead in. Let's say I want the video to start there. Maybe let's go a little bit further and maybe I wanted to start just as the placement wives there so it starts there. So now I in order to set that as my input or start point I just grabbed this little line there and set it to there. So that's now where the video will start from. And I want it to end so let's just go out the other end.

Let's say I want it to end just about the just at that point. So I bring my endpoint in. So now my 22nd video becomes a 17 second video, or rather less than that, because I'm studying I'm studying at the four seconds in anti. So now if I export the video, that'll be the start four seconds in, and that'll be the end of the 17 second mark. So it's a 13 second video, isn't it? So you can do that.

And then just collapse that to do your trimming. So you can't actually edit video in Lightroom. You can't compile multiple clips together, but you can certainly prepare clips to export to edit in some other application like certainly Photoshop, you can edit video and now or, you know, premiere or whatever your video editing application of choices. Now the other cool thing we can of course to is we can add adjustments to the images and this is this is one of the few times that quickly Develop is actually useful because if I go into the develop module, then it says, video is not supported in develop. But what I can do is in the library module, I can apply what's available here from the quick develop. So you can see shadows and highlights and clarity, unfortunately not available, but I can certainly add some contrast and you know, I can take the exposure up a little bit, maybe, maybe I want to convert it to black and white skin, I know I've got the vibrance but not clarity, so maybe I could, let's just pull the vibrance down to get this nice kind of washed out look.

And maybe we'll take the exposure down a little bit more. So I can go ahead and do a few little bits and pieces there. And that's okay or not. So if I want to take that back to the original appearance, go back to my default settings. Then that's the original video. Now, the fact that the video is not supported in Develop module is a shame but there's a little Have a workaround.

So watch this. I'm going to go and I'm going to grab my poster frame here that we Sorry, my steel frame that I took. And I'm going to go into the develop module. And I'm going to just engineer this nice look the clarity in and I'm going to pull the highlights down. And I'm just going to add a little bit of clarity. So give it this nice kind of gritty, sorry, contrast.

So before, after before after it's got this nice, gritty look and feel. And I'm going to save that as a preset and click over here in presets. And I'm just going to call this just going to call this video test and create. So it's just going to include all those various settings from the preset I go ahead and click Create. And now I might have preset. So now I can go back to the grid.

And I can select my video clip, and I can go up to the quick develop and I can choose my video test preset. And I can go ahead and I can apply the preset from there. But unfortunately it says some develop settings are not supported for video files, only the following settings. So it's actually not gonna let me it's actually still not going to let me apply the clarity, unfortunately. So it's going to take exposure contrast whites, blacks, I guess saturation and vibrance, so I get saturation, but I don't get some of the other effects I was looking for. So yeah, you know, mucking around, I don't do a lot of work and video personally, as you can probably tell from this demonstration, but I thought I'd like to show you how I can import it in how I can make a few adjustments, how I can trim the head and the title of the video in order to produce clips.

And then if I wanted to export it, I'm just going to hit export here and in the export options under video, I've got a few different options here for the video format. If I want to the highest quality there is the DP x, the H 264 is like a compressed format, or I've got the original unedited file that I can include there and then quality you know, similar to what JPEG, I guess it's the same basic principle is compression right there. And I can choose that and send the video clip off for other use, which I won't do right now. So that's importing video and even a bit of a sneak a bit of a sneak preview of the export dialog as well, which we don't really get too deeply into until session four. Yep, so hopefully that was useful. And I guess you might inadvertently if you've been shooting some video on your camera, you may end up importing some inadvertently and all of a sudden it's there in Lightroom and you're wondering what you can do and you can certainly play around with it a little bit, as I've just demonstrated.
