Welcome back to lesson three. And lesson three we will cover bullies are not just at the playground. In this lesson, we will explore the negative effects that can result from an environment that does not effectively address bullying behaviors in the workplace. Managers can play a major role to empower their teams to become reflective upon their own behaviors. In this lesson, we will review of bullying and instability assessment that managers themselves can take to assess their behaviors, as well as share as a tool for their teams to confidentially self assess their behaviors in the workplace. Let's dive in.
Did you realize the cost Cost of workplace bullying can cost up to 180 billion dollars annually for corporations. That's a lot of money. It also causes an unhealthy work environment where you have low employee morale, low productivity, a high rate of unresolved complaints filed. And it's also a place where employees feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Now, we know all bullying is not the same, you do have some that's more aggressive than others. However, adults that bully at work are often a little more subtle in their actions, at least compared to kids at the playground.
Nonetheless, even if it is subtle, what we do know is that it is very impactful to their targets. So it is important to recognize and put a stop to it. In some cases, there are some leaders that are known to be bullies, but because they are positively impacting the bottom line, they are allowed to continue in that behavior. This must stop immediately. And if that leader is truly impacting your bottom line in a positive way, then you make sure you get the appropriate help for that leader to change their behavior. Because as we discussed in our earlier lessons, your employees their eyes are always on you and if the leader is able to get away with bullying The employee must feel it's okay for them to bully as well.
We need to put a stop to it, we need to recognize it, call it out for what it is and make that change. Earlier in this lesson I mentioned that we would have two team building tools and one is the workplace bullying assessment and the other is the workplace instability assessment. What then both of those tools, there will be a series of questions and it will indicate one's tendency to have bullying behaviors or uncivil behaviors. It is not an all inclusive definite test is only an assessment and it will not say yes, you're a bully or No you're not. It's just identify some behaviors. These We'll help and encouraging a reflective approach to engage your teams in the process of recognizing issues and making positive changes.
They will also provide a unique team building opportunity for you and the team. It is a way to talk about the subject and ultimately can build trust in the organization or on your team. Now, keep in mind, you should highly encourage your employees to participate. However, please do not force this as a requirement only as a fun team building event. In fact, I encourage you to tell your employees they can take it home or go into a confidential space at work. To complete and assess their own behaviors, through honest reflection.
And of course, as the manager, it would be excellent if you complete your assessment first. And then you can even come back and share some of your thoughts about this estimate. And in some cases, maybe even identify some of the behaviors that you may have. I think this is an awesome way to build trust on your team. You can click on either button to gain access to the assessment. additional copies will be provided in the online course packet, and you can make additional copies of those.
Remember the high financial cost Due to the loss of productivity, and low worker morale are all potential adverse consequences when you allow or tolerate workplace bullying and or workplace instabilities in your workplace. In the next lesson, you will be able to identify the top techniques to create a culture of empowerment
