DESCRIPTION: Positioning your kick drum within the live room makes all the difference in getting the best out of the low end. The phase comes into play yet again.
Finding the right spot to set up the kick drum within the live room is the best start you can have to a good recording. The trick is to move the kick drum around until you can hear acoustically where you get the best bass response. This will be the position where the direct sound waves and reflected sound waves are in phase with each other. The fundamental frequencies of the toms, when added, are more or less an octave above the kick drum, so this will be a good position for them to be in phase too.
