DESCRIPTION: Chronic Disease Symptom Cycle

Adapted from: Lorig, Kate, et al. Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions: Self-Management of Heart Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, Depression, Asthma, Bronchitis, Emphysema, and Other Physical and Mental Health Conditions. Bull Publishing Company, 2013.
Chronic Disease self–management cycle.
The Chronic Disease self-management cycle demonstrates that individuals with a chronic illness will follow a particular pattern in terms of managing the illness. Initially, the client will experience a flare-up of symptoms, which leads to rest. During this time, a client may not be able to work with you until the flare-up subsides. It is also normal for the client to seek medical treatment if the flare is either bad or new symptoms are present. When the individual is back to a regular schedule, they tend to seek further information in the community through support groups, libraries, and other information channels. (Lorig et al., 2012)
