Somatic Movement

Thomas Hanna first discovered somatics in 1970, he was an educator of the practice. The idea was first taken from Eastern traditions and applied to tai chi and qi gong. Other disciplines in this category include yoga, pilates, the Alexander technique, laban movement analysis, the Feldenkrais method, and mind/body centering. When taking a somatic movement class, class participants need to move at a slower pace and feel each movement and how the nervous system and skeletal muscles are relating to each other. Have the client notice tightness and soreness throughout the body as they move. (Peterson, and Day, 2010)&emsp;The goal is to change the muscle from being tight, painful, and contracted to having less pain, better posture, decreased muscle tightness, and muscle contractions.
