Abraham Maslow developed his motivational theory in 1943 called Maslow&rsquo;s Hierarchy of Needs. His theory was created for the general population; however, clients with chronic illness have specific needs that are somewhat different from the rest of the population as well. This also brings with it added stress for these individuals and their families. Everyone in the world has basic needs such as shelter, food, and water, which we refer to as Maslow&rsquo;s Hierarchy of Needs, which is a five-tiered motivational theory. The pyramid mirrors the hierarchy of needs of individuals with chronic illnesses. Maslow&rsquo;s hierarchy includes psychological needs, safety, belongingness, love, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The bottom of the pyramid symbolizes the most basic human needs.
