Lesson number nine, we're going to take a look at two licks that Chuck Berry played on an instrumental tune called Ingo. And it's played in the key of B. and Chuck Berry plays both guitars on the recording, he plays one and then he overdub the second guitar. The select that I'm going to show you comes from the third verse of the song. And I really can't play the two legs together because they overlap. I wouldn't be able to do it. So I'm going to show you the two legs in isolation.

I'm going to try to play one time, the whole thing but at the time is going to be off. So stick with me here then I'll break it down with each part. I'll show you each part separately. goes like this I like that now the timing is all messed up because the second guitar part, the sliding, six chords come in as he's finishing up that first leg. So the first leg stays the same throughout the verse. So over the one over the four over the five, he's playing this and all I'm doing is I'm playing over a first position B barre chord, and I'm making that double stop on the 11th fret.

I've got my pinky on the 11th fret of the first string, 10th fret of the first string, and my ring finger on the ninth fret of the second string and my first finger is barring at the seven So one more time. And then over the top on the one when he plays that lick, we've got the sliding six chord and we're playing in B. So this is our basics. Check the tab and we've seen this before we're sliding into it from an AE six. And the way he picks this is a little little odd. So listen carefully.

So what I'm doing is when I slide up the first time from the A to the bead, a six to the B six, picking the third string coming up and getting The first string which actually gets a little bit of the second string, that I'm picking the third string, as I slide back. See how I do that. And when I pick, when I say I pick the third string, that just means that's the first string that I hit with the chord shape. I'm strumming it hard enough that I actually get some of the other strings to ring out too. So it goes like this. One more time.

Remember this pattern because we're gonna play it the same way over each chord. Then when it comes back, he goes. So what I'm doing here is I'm sliding up picking the third string, the first string, third string again. And then when I strum up when I use the upstroke, and I get the first string, I'm sliding it back down. So it's like this. Here's the first one.

Listen to the original recording and you'll see what I'm talking about. When the song goes over the four which is gonna be, this stays the same. Now the sliding six chord goes from a D six to an e6 and back like this. Same picking, same chord shape, just going from a D six e six, back to the D. And then when the song gets over the five, this is where it's a little tricky. The five is an F sharp, so here's my F sharp six. But if I try to move it down to slide it, I run out of room.

So what I've got to do is play it like this with the first string open, and I'm using my ring finger on the second fret of the second string, and my second finger on the first fret of the third string, and here's what I do, I slide it up, and then I put my first finger on the second floor. Right in the first string so like this little tricky but that's what he's doing. I think I'm off to the little bit when I play the example but that's what he's supposed to be doing. So, the third verse of the instrumental Ingo, you're playing the two guitars, one overdub, he works these two licks together and they it's kind of a call and response thing where they play off each other. It's really neat. It's always been one of my favorite Chuck Berry licks.

So that is lick number 90 and that is from an instrumental he did called Ingo, which I don't think was ever released as a single or on an album.
