Our next lesson, we're going to take a look at some different ways to play that basic bogey rhythm. And we're going to start out just by looking at the key of C, and a couple of different ways you could approach this. So for playing in the key of C, Chuck Berry typically played the bogie rhythm and C over a second position barre chord like we saw in no particular place to go so I play something like this. And then when he goes to the for the app, he go to the what I call the low position which is here. And then when he goes to the G or the five chord he play right here which is the low G. Now another way to do this and if you listen to tins and the KFC, like my Mustang, for That's a 10 where I think he's doing this differently.

And other examples in the key of B flat, the song, it wasn't me. And the both of those tunes instead of going to what I call the low position half, he's gonna go to the second bar chord like this. Instead of this if you listen to Chuck Berry's rhythm patterns of different songs, you'll hear him do it both ways. So the song Mustang forward in the key of C, he might be playing it here. going here, back to here. And then for the five instead of going to this G, it's gonna go to this G, the second position barre chord, which for G is between the 10th and the 12th fret.

And then for the one he could go back to the seat here we'll go to the second Position barre chord here what's the point of all this listen to check Barry songs and you'll hear him do this differently. And sometimes, especially when he's using an F or G, he'll play the low position. Or he'll play the high position. That's what I call it low or high. And that's just something you got to listen to a lot of Chuck Berry, and you know, I think you'll see what I'm talking about. So that's, you know, a chord idea, variation on that boogie rhythm.

Now the main thing he does with these is he plays them in different ways. And the basic straight ahead shuffle like Johnny be good and the key of B flat he plays like this. We're going to use B flat as a reference key, because there's a few songs we can talk about, and B flat. So Johnny be good. We got Like that pretty straightforward rhythm. And this part, when you hit that you should be hitting you know where the drum is keeping the time in the 10.

And that's a good way to make sure that you're in time with the song when you're playing. You gotta have a good drummer to do that. If the drummer is off, and you're pretty much screwed as far as timing goes, but anyway, that's one way to play it. Another way is what I call the choppy version, and there's a tune called let it rock, which is a really cool Chuck Berry song. It's only a minute 47 seconds, I think in length, but it's one of his coolest songs and whoever's playing that rhythm instead of playing it like this. He plays it more choppy like this.

You hear the difference in that choppier style. The way I'm getting that is I'm using my right hand, but I'm also adjusting the pressure on the strings with my left hand. And the way I pick it, I'm using downstrokes and upstrokes. And so you'll hear Chuck Berry, do something like that. Now something else that you'll hear him do is to play it more like a blue shuffle and there's some of his blue songs like childhood sweetheart. And what's another one childhood sweetheart?

Oh, I gotta find my baby that's got more of a single string bass drawn, but there's a tune he did later called bio, which is really strong blue shuffle, and you'll hear him play it like this. That's like a blue shuffle. Another example round and around. This is in the key of B. So I'm just going to slide up the fret to the seventh and ninth frets. He plays it more like he did in no particular place to go but he adds a little rhythmic thing to it something like this.

And then when he goes to the four, he's going to go to an E. played here, which is the way a lot of acoustic and electric blues guys play their ears shuffle like this. Jimmy Reed, listen to some Jimmy Reed and you'll hear that but Chuck Berry, or his guitar player on around and around, he's playing this you know, changing the rhythm and how he's playing that. So be aware when you listen to Chuck Berry stuff that you can take that basic Boogie rhythm and play it a lot of different ways. Some people think every Chuck Berry song. It's like that, but it's not. And you hear this when you watch Some of the videos where Chuck Berry has these bands of variability backing them up most of the rhythm guitar players have no idea.

You know how to play these shuffles the way they they were played on the recordings, which is too bad because to me, that's where a lot of the charm of the Tetbury sound comes from. One last variation I'm going to throw in here, which is also very important is extending the pinkie. And the way you do that is like this. So let's go. Let's go to B flat stay in B flat. What I'm talking about is playing this.

So if I take that Pinkie in that basic shuffle, this is in B flat and I go from the 10th fret to the 11th fret, that's where I get this. And Chuck Berry, the rhythm guitar and a lot of Chuck Berry songs does that. Now in half if you're doing that now that is really hard to do and you hear a lot to Chuck Berry songs where the guitar goes to the app and he's playing in this low position of the first and third fret, he'll just stay on this. When he goes back to the sea, he might play this. And so you got to learn how to do that. It's not easy.

And if you're playing it here, to get that stretch, you can't keep your ring finger you got to take your ring finger off stretch, and put it back. So that's in sia, so good practicing, you can do that anywhere. So be flat, watch this. And that is a little technique that you have to be able to do to reach to make those big stretches on those bogie rhythms. So check Barry. True most of the songs have some form of this Boogie rhythm.

But false, it's not the same on every song he uses it differently or his guitar player uses it differently. And I want to To practice this and play along with the songs that I have listed on the handout, and see if you can hear these these subtle differences and see if you can hear how they change the really the essence of the songs. Now when we come back, we're going to take a look at one more chord idea, and then we'll be ready to start looking at playing Chuck Berry licks, which is probably why you bought this series in the first place.
