Lesson 40, we're going to take a look at what are called n tags. And tags are simply guitar licks or phrases that you use to end the song. And while a lot of Chuck Berry songs ended with a fade up or the song just kind of slowly fades out, some have a distinct end tech. So we're going to look at some examples of these. The first one comes from the tune in no particular place to go. And to show you what how the end tag works.

I'll just play the song at the end from the five to the four to the one or something like this. So the end tag is this. If you listen carefully to the end of no particular place to go That's what he's doing this part, got my first finger on the G as the fourth string fifth fret. And I'm taking my pinky from the eighth fret of the fifth string, and then it goes 545 and then I move my ring finger to the seventh fret, repeat that pattern. When I say five, I mean fifth string, then move the second finger to the sixth fret. And then you're gonna put your first finger on the fifth fret of the fourth and the fifth string.

So we've got this and then the wrap it up, he's gonna go from an A flat to a G. And I think I hear him playing the chord, the top four strings, bottom four strings, but the emphasis is on the bass string. So that whole turnaround This is from no particular place to go or that hole and tank There's one example of a Chuck Berry and another one comes from his song roll over Beethoven in the key of E flat. I wasn't even aware that there was an N tag on this until I saw a lesson by a German fella named Randy rich Randy Rector. got great rockabilly lessons fantastic teacher. And he does a rockabilly series that I purchased here on Udemy. And he shows the tag for roll over Beethoven.

So hopefully Randy, you'll forgive me for sharing this with other people too. But at the end of the song, it's an E flat over the first position, blue Xbox, he's gonna play this as he wraps up the song, so here's my first position blue spot. E flat. That's what he's done. Listen carefully to the song I had to go back and listen to it, you can hear this I'm starting from the 13th fret of the fifth string going to the 10th fret 1213 on the fourth string, same thing on the third string and then 11th fret of the second string. So it's like this.

They take some eath ninth chord to an E flat nine. kind of a neat little, you can move that around and play it in different keys and playing it over the one the first position barre chord. Another example of a typical turnaround, rather keep getting those mixed up in the KFC. This is from the song It wasn't me. And the song comes to play something like this. pretty close to what he plays I'm not sure if I have that one 100% but all he's doing is playing over that first position.

Barre chord, we're in the key of C, starting on the eighth fret. First position Nightcore, check the tab on this, I got quite a few of these. So I'm going to shorten these lessons a little bit. Now, if you watch the live videos, that film of Chuck performing live, seeing quite a few or he ends it a little differently. He uses that same basic turnaround, but he does this. Instead of just playing the nine, he cuts the single string off, single string run off a little bit and goes to a D nine, D flat nine C with the second position.

Ninth barre chord one more time All the strings are so the way that fits in the song goes from the five. In our third example, our fourth example comes from Maybelline 1955 and the song is in B flat and at the end of the song goes back and forth between the one and the five. But over the top of that he plays something like this. All he's doing there is playing the second, the double string slides, double stop slides on the second and third strings out of the C or a B flat. So we've got those positions and I started out with kind of an unusual lick, he's going to lead into it, you can check the tab on this. He's gonna go to the fifth fret, second and third strings.

Now we haven't seen this band in at all. Usually when we see that double String Band, it's going to be right in the middle of the first blues box. Now we're gonna do it here on the second and third strings. Then he's gonna go back to the third fret like that. Then you got this sliding from the fourth and fifth fret to the second and third strings to the fifth or the sixth to the seventh. So it's like this.

So let's play the whole antec so far actually starts fading out before he plays that last part. So there is the end tag from Maybelline. One more real quick for you here. This is a simple tag from Chuck Berry's version of BB King sweet 16. It's in the key of G and he wraps up the tin like this. Have a nice day.

Chord at the end. So all I'm doing here is walking from a G seven double stop to a g double stop. So we start in the key of G, sixth and seventh fret, second and third string. Fifth and Sixth, fourth and fifth, third and fourth and then we're gonna come to this core, make a second possession and take your pinky and put it on the 12th fret. I hear both the first and second strings at the 12th fret. Hear that you hear this?

I hear. So one more time for sweet 16 and he hits a note right before he gets that chord, I think it's the 10th fret of the fifth string. I can't tell for sure. I think logically that's what it would be. kind of a neat and tech. So there's a few examples I tagged one more out for you.

It's the end tag from 30 days which is kind of neat. But with 10 minute limit here, I don't have time to show you that. So those are five or six different ways that Chuck Berry ended his songs. And you can use those and play the song so you can use those and tags and, you know, be creative and use those to end other songs.
