Proper follow-up is one of the most important things a job seeker can do after an interview. However, amazingly, so many candidates fail to do this most basic step. Quite often, an interviewer can be torn between two candidates. One candidate may have better work experience while another may be more personable. Sometimes, it can be very difficult for an interviewer to choose between two top candidates. When an interviewer is torn on which candidate to choose, often, the deciding factor is the quality and caliber of the candidates' follow-up after the interview.
Follow-up can be something as simple as a thank-you e-mail or as extensive as a formal business plan. The method of follow-up you choose will be dictated by the circumstances you encounter. If you are interviewing for a CEO position, the board may ask for a formal business plan. However, if you just completed a corporate visit for a regional sales manager position, then sending a thank-you e-mail is certainly appropriate.
