DESCRIPTION: Stress Management Exercise Guidelines &ndash; Phase One
Phase one of stress management personal training is for clients who are undergoing severe chronic stress. The goal is to have them complete a 30 to 40-minute workout at 40 to 50% of exercise intensity until the stressful situation has passed, and cortisol levels have declined. The Stress Management Institute advises that clients do 15 to 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise and 15 to 20 minutes of strength training two days a week. Gradually increase the clients' workload like you would any other client. When the client is comfortable with two days a week and working out for an hour, start to advance the program. You also want to make sure the client is not canceling sessions all of the time. In the beginning, they may cancel because they feel that they cannot fit exercise into their day.
