The Brain and Meditation

Human Brainwaves
Brainwaves were first discovered by Dr. Hans Berger, a German neurologist, in the 1920s. He initially thought that he discovered psychic power running through the brain. He ended up uncovering what we know today as the electroencephalogram (E.E.G.) and was able to record brainwaves for the first time. The E.E.G. is used today to diagnose epilepsy, Alzheimer's Disease, and certain sleep conditions. Dr. Berger discovered five different types of brainwaves, and they are listed from lowest to highest frequency. The brainwaves are Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma waves, which each have their function and purpose. (Goodtherapy, 2017)
Delta brainwaves are being used for meditation and when someone is sleeping but not experiencing dreams. This state promotes healing of the body as someone is sleeping or meditating.
