The oldest remains of human settlements in the margins of the Nile date from 40,000 years at Wadi Halfa in present-day Nubian Desert, at the Sudan-Egypt border. Archaeological excavations brought to light the so-called Ring Tents. These are flat depressions on the soil, used to secure wooden poles, held upright, and covered to serve as a tent.
