Another golden principle of plain writing: do not assume too much on the part of your readers.

What the readers get out of your writing may not be exactly what you had in mind.

Plain writing is clear writing. And to write clearly, you have to know for sure how your text will be read, perceived, and understood by your audience. You can't do that on assumptions alone.
