DESCRIPTION: Silence may be golden, but too much of it will drive you mad. Orfield Laboratories in South Minneapolis is the home of a space that was once dubbed &ldquo;the quietest place on Earth&rdquo; by Guinness World Records (as of 2015, the title belongs to a quiet room developed by Microsoft in Washington state). The lab is referred to as an &ldquo;anechoic chamber&rdquo;; a space free from echo as the room&rsquo;s infrastructure absorbs 99.9% of sound. A chamber so quiet, in fact, that the background noise is measured in negative decibels (-9.4dB). For context, a typical quiet bedroom at night measures approximately 30dB.
The chamber is used by various manufacturers to test product volume and sound quality (for instance, Harley Davidson used the lab to create quieter bikes that still sound like an authentic Harley). It can also drive a person mad.
