Here we are already on lesson number five of writing but I else part one, academic writing. We're going to talk this time about tables. Here we see an example of a table. I didn't know IELTS exam questions will be asked about this table. If we have a look at the table, we get the information we need to know. It's all about methods of travel by percentage.

And it talks about three types of traveling, walking, Oka, I bought public transport, and it shows figures for three different countries, Britain, Australia, and Singapore. hold off the figures as shown as the same Teachers tables are relatively simple to describe. So this will also be quite a short lesson. Once you have the theory of how this is done, you can apply it to all tables that you see. Tables used to describe different types of information. And I use primarily because some information is difficult to put into a graph.

So let's get straight into the practicality of this. Because that's where you get the practice from. Okay, using the very same table that we started off with. He'll say that continuity underneath awesome expressions we can use To describe this table, here is an exercise where we can fill in the words from this suggestions here in to the gaps. fill in the gaps is a common practice in piles. So, here we have to complete the writing with words of this box.

So, you can pause the video right now and see if you can fill in the details. We'll check it out in just a moment. As we go along, you'll see here a couple of really good suggestions about vocabulary. They are mentioned in the context. We'll talk about those in just a moment. Okay.

Stop the video, fill out the details. And let's see how you do. done it. Okay, we're back. Let's see. The car is this something means of transport are British and Australian schoolchildren with something of students in both countries getting to school in this way.

So let's have a look. We're talking about British and Australian. So Britain and Australia and the car. Let's see how does it compare with the others look 65% 65% it certainly is bigger than most of the others with the exception of this one. So, in Britain and Australia, we might look for a word The car is something means of transport. Looks to me like it's most common.

Do you agree? The car is the most common means of transport for British and Australian schoolchildren with something of students in both countries getting to school in this way. What? What if students ah 65% so we probably put 65% here Do you think so? Yes, 65% of students in both countries getting to school in this way. Good expression, in contrast, is as an opposite.

Only something of Singaporean students use cars and this is the method of transport the only water Singaporean students use cars, Singaporean cars, what do you think? 10% and this is the something method of transport there. Okay, the lowest one, so therefore it's probably the least common. Right? There are considerable differences in something for public transport, public transport, our ride in the water for public transport percent 9.4 percentage, figures, fingers maybe most least common note popular doesn't Fit. So it has to be figures.

Meaning numbers. A large something of students in Singapore use public transport a large. Remember when we had pie graphs we had to talk about percentage, a large percentage of Singaporeans, students use public transport. Yes, it's pretty big isn't it? In Britain and Australia, figures for public transport or lower being and something respectively so looking at public transport, respectively means in this order Britain first, so it would be 16% I reckon. And then Australia 20% See how all we are doing here is reporting what we see.

Number six less than something of students walk to school in Britain and Australia. Be careful with this one. It's a trick. a trick question. List less than what? Walk walk Britain, Australia, less than Ah, could it be less than 15?

No. Because it says both. Susan both. Could it be less than 19? No. It can't be less than 19 because one of them is 19.

So it has to be less than 20 st This is a trap. Be careful. We have to really be thinking when we do this. For Singaporeans walking is the second something option. Singaporeans walking, the second, that's the first because the biggest, has the third. Ah, so it has to be the second most common option Do you think the second most common option with a quarter of the students traveling to school still talking about Singapore, a quarter is 25%.

With a quarter of the students traveling to school, on foot on foot is another way of saying Walking. How did you do? Did you get it? If not, rewind the video and check it all out again. Yeah. So how did you do some good words for your vocabulary notebook from this exercise were in contrast, and respectively because this was quite a short lesson.

Let's also take a look at our charts. This is a bar chart where we've got bars going up and down. Okay. Let's have a look at this one. tourist arrivals in Brazil. We see here some years and we see here some numbers.

So this This line is called the vertical axis and the other one is called a horizontal axis. In this case, on the vertical axis, we see numbers and on the horizontal axis we see is so we have to write an overview at the beginning of our short essay on this. Your first sentence needs to provide an overview view of any graph. So the examiner knows that you understand what is being shown. So let's think about an overview what can we say about this graph? To help with you overview, this is what we have to ask ourselves, what does this graph represent?

How about this? The graph represents the increase in the number of tourists visiting Brazil between the years 1995 and 2000. Is that fair enough? It shows the increase because they are increasing. We know it's about tourists. We know it's about tourists in Brazil.

And we know it's between the years 1995 2000. So that's why we say in our overall overview, the graph represents the increase in the number of tourists visiting Brazil, between the US 1995 and 2000. And then we carry on with that description. Continue. Like so. Almost 2 million people visited Brazil in the year 1995.

See the almost 10 in the energy notified. And there was a significant increase in the following years until 2000. went over 5 million people visited. So overview. Yes, excellent. That's it, the bar graphs. In our next lesson, we're going to talk about diagrams.

This is the most difficult part of part one writing. However, for a reasonably intelligent person with an intermediate level of English, it is not as difficult as you might think. So far, so good. You've done well.
