DESCRIPTION: Remember, we want our people to be able to say, “Been there, done that, successfully.” If not, the employee may have to improvise or, in some cases, avoid taking action when action is required. Artifacts can be found in any profession or discipline. Under stress, one will revert to one’s instincts (training). Artifacts are things we put into training that we do not use in real life. We do this to make it easier, safer, or more cost-effective in some cases. If you drive certain vehicles for employment, drive those same vehicles in training. If you use certain weapons, tools, or devices in real life, use the same in training.
Contextual training is normally performance-based - pass/fail. Some scores can be attached for certain skills, such as firearms, driving, etc. Contextual training will, if done correctly, expand an employee’s comfort zone.
