The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) was designed for low to moderate-income taxpayers. Taxpayers filing tax returns and following the rules below are eligible to take the credit.
Earned Income Requirement
To meet the earned income requirement taxpayers must have earned income from wages, income from self-employment, nontaxable combat pay, certain disability income, benefits from a union strike, or income from a job where the employer did not withhold taxes. The IRS lists the following activities that specifically do not qualify.

Pay you got for work when you were an inmate in a penal institution
Interest and dividends
Pensions or annuities
Social Security
Unemployment benefits

You will note that none of the above constitutes earnings from current work except work...
