The next shape I'd like to talk about is double walled forms. And double walled forms can be a lot of fun because it gives the illusion of this really thick wall bowl, or this really thick wall donut or handle while still being lightweight. So the first one we're going to do one donut and then a double wall bowl. So I'll do the donut first. It's a little bit easier to see the technique. And this double wall donut, you can do a lot of things with it, it can be a great handle.

You can use it as a form itself, which will once we have finished up here, I'll show you some cool techniques. I've even seen people make them into flutes before. Going into a lot of things with it. It's enough to clay as normal and take it down to your dome. I have a pretty good sized amount of clay here. So I have a pretty good ring or pretty good doughnut.

But you might even want to do just a real small one for a little accent handle or a little handle on the size of the base, which can be creates a nice interest too, especially if it's a looser, more organic shape. Because then you have this tight ring with a more organic flow of the vessel. Now when I open this up when I take it all the way down to the bat, pull these balls out as a swell I compressed down again, you know, so pull this out to this really flat dome or donut. I didn't start with this small centerpiece and try to stretch this out all the way because it could again come detached from the bat. Again, I'm going to pull it out roughly about the width of the initial ring that I started. Make sure we're compressed down and connected to our back to see if you can see to take it all the way down to the bat.

So right now I just held this fat ring of clay. Now next I'm going to take this ring of clay and cut it in half or possibly slightly farther on the inside and a little more clay on the outside because the outside was gonna have farther to go It has a greater strip circumference. Now I tend to just use my finger but if you need to, you could use your knife or bracing your hands on top of each other. Supporting the walls with your inside fingers and the outside with your thumb and cutting down but again, I generally just use my my finger in keeping my hands in contact my elbows in tight everything supported. cut that in half following the line the walls down roughly about a quarter inch from the floor. Okay, now the next step is to pull up our inside walls.

Now I'm moving over to my smaller sponge me a tighter area here I don't need all that water. You want to pull up your inside wall first because if you pull up your outside wall it's going to be it's going to get in your way as you when you try to move to that inside. And when I try to keep my tops in as tight as I can because at the end, I'm going to overlap them so you don't want them flaring out. Keep them in tight. throat fingertip to fingertip pulling up that doughnut keeping that top in tight. Okay, next I'm going to move to my outside wall.

I'm already trying to limit the amount of water I'm using on the inside. I don't want to get a puddle started and next that's going to be hard to remove later. I'll pull up this outside wall. Now next I'm going to come back in and begin to shape these belly off the inside a little bit, or belly inwards actually, and belly out the outside. Okay, we were just about there. Now, the key to doing these double wall forms, whether you're talking to donut or a bowl is going to be deceived.

Okay, because that is the area that's going to crack on you if it's going to crack. And the key is, is to not but that seam up against each other, but to overlap it. So I'm actually gonna take the inside wall, under the outside wall, the top wall on and throw it over and create a nice solid connection. So the outside walls thrown slightly higher than the inside wall, and I'm simply compressing them in together. And once I make contact, they begin to stick. You can see I have this lip here, the outside wall.

I'm simply going to take that and throw it down over that inside wall. using just the tip of my finger, I don't want to cover too much surface area, that's going to create more pressure on the piece. Throw it over. Continue the illusion that this is a really thick ring, it's important that it appears seamless. If there's a seam if it's mostly a seamless noticeable, it's going to take away from the illusion that piece. Now I have this pocket of air in here and you can use that pocket of air as if it's your inside hand a little bit.

You can't really compress a lot and do can't Over shape and because that air inside will find the saucepan and clay and called cause the balls off, but you can use it to clean up the edge as long as you're not using too much pressure and fine tuner, nice round shape. Now lastly, I'm going to come in and clean this up with my wooden knife. I want to poke a hole in it so the air can escape. set it off to the side that is set up to that level. hardscape and then we'll come back and trim it. And we'll have this hollow ring that we can do a number of things with.

We'll talk about in just a couple of minutes. First, this guy real quick. So now that our donut has had a couple minutes to set up, we're ready to trim it. We're just going to trim in a normal fashion but we're gonna be trimming the inside as well so that we just have a nice finished rounded form. And these are great for building the handles to use as feed on pieces or as their own sculptural unit. Lots of times I'll use them to build wheels out for my sculptural pieces, things like that are for decorative tops using a couple of these intersecting with each other.

Okay, it's Kurt town's normal trimming tool. I'm gonna come in here and we can round this out, finish off our shape. Little web server. I think we can work with it. Get up with a rube again. Now we have a thrown donut that we can use.

Some lot of times people will use these I'll throw a small cylinder for the bottom and throw a little spout on the top and create vase forms. Like I mentioned I've seen people who use these to create flutes before by cutting cut off errs. I like to use them for handles a lot of the time. Kind of larger basket form in all my water bottle there Some handles, there's a larger piece a couple handles on the side. Whereas a decorative elements are for building wheels things along that line. A goblet assignment I do with my classes, here's one that was used for handles were just three donuts in our locking to create this kind of decorative handle shape.

So there's a lot of things you can do with these pieces. But now you're just beginning to create parts to build these larger, more complex forms. Next, we'll take a look at a double wall ball which will be more of a finished form within itself compared to the donut that is often used more for building blocks for additional pieces.
