Okay, the first live that I'm going to show you that fits inside of this flange is just a flat lid that is thrown directly on the bat is probably one of the simplest lids to throw. And but it is limited in the sense that it is a flat lid so it's going to be more prone to warping. This type of lid works best only for small, say like cookie jar type shapes, things like that. You don't want to use this type of lift for anything larger than five to six inches. Also with this lid with any lid. You want to consider how tall you throw your outer wall of your flange here.

And ideally the lid itself is going to be roughly about that same thickness so that you have a nice continual flow from the body of the piece up into the lid. So first thing I'm I need to do is measure my vessel. And again I'm going to be measuring from that outside corner of our flange right about there. Next, we can move over to our wheel and throw our lid. Again this lid is going to be thrown knob side up. This will be the only lid that I'm going to throw today that will be knob side up.

With this type of you know setting with you within the plant everything else will be thrown upside down. So the center up your click and leave a small piece of clay within the center, which you can then use as your knob of your piece. flattening out your walls good general thickness again is that quarter inch thick of our calibers. Okay, so we are getting very close my third that out just a tad more. You see this is a very simple lid, very direct. But again, anything flat like this does run more that risk of warping during the firing.

So this only works for smaller forms. The reason why that working is because when we find these pieces in the count at the content, that click to use to go through that stuff. process without silica is melting. And if you could put in a special suit and climb into that kiln when is that a mature content, you could actually start to work and manipulate this clay as if it was leather hard plastic clay once again, which means that anything that could pin potentially warp at the wet stage, let the hard stage wet to let the heart stage right in here could potentially work within the kiln too. And then you have that way to the knob in the middle. So if these flat lids are too far apart, they just become to slump in the kiln and generally crack around that.

The warping area looking pretty good. So I'm going to go ahead and you know this outside man and finish my novel Okay, now I'm going to double check my measurement before I finished my live because these these calibers can get bombed or anything like that and the measurement can get lost along the way so it's always best to double check your measurement. You know, measure twice cut once and we're gonna come over major. All right our measurement still looks good. Double check it on our lid looks like we could take this in just a tad. Now when you are throwing your lids It is always best to throw the lid Immediately after you throw the form even if you're working in a series like this throw your first one throw your lid for it, then throw the second form throw the lid for that reason being is this claim begins to shrink almost immediately as soon as it starts to dry, it's going to begin to shrink so if you throw your, your base forms you know now and come back an hour later to throw your lids.

You're going to your measurements are going to be off and you're gonna have an ill fit with your lid. So again, take your measurements as soon as you're done throwing your form and then come back in and throw your lids. Okay, and we are there. Now I'm just gonna hit this with the torch for a second. stiffen it up so we can pop it off and see how we fit All right, now that our live has had a chance to stiffen up for a second, I'm going to go ahead and remove it. And let's see how we did.

Now this live doesn't even necessarily need to be trimmed, most likely, I could just gently hold it in my hand and clean up the bottom side of this. Or if you would like to trim it, I would use a small Chuck and just flip it up, set the chuck within here, so then you could trim that, that bottom side it is still a little soft. But you can see the idea when I come in and clean up this edge here. That should fit in something like so. So you can see the height of that edge of the lid is roughly the same as our edge of our piece here. So we come in and we have a nice natural flow there.

You know, not a lot of movement in this piece. It's a you know, it's pretty tight form, fairly straight edge. But again, that's intentional. I'm going to show you the difference between these lids.
