Wow, we have covered so much already in this training. Let’s do a short recap

First, we tackled the process of improving the experience of the current board members we have. We talked about the Executive Director Board report and how equipping our board members with valuable, timely information can improve their understanding of our work and their ability to ask better questions, engage on a deeper level, and share our mission with others.

Then, we went all-in with our upside-down board meeting agenda. We learned how to literally turn the meetings upside down and lead with the big, important conversations that remind our board members how valuable they are to accomplishing our mission. You learned how to get them talking with discussion leaders and how to maximize the time you spend with them, focusing their energy on the vision and overall health and wellbeing of your nonprofit.

If that wasn’t enough, lesson two had us diving deep into understanding what our board is really missing. We conquered our fear of numbers and charts and introduced the board skills Inventory to gain a better understanding of what we actually need. Plus, we realized that by completing the inventory, we had a genuine reason to reach out to our board members and have a great conversation about their interests, their expertise, and their passions. It was a win-win.

Next, we tackled strategy number two which had us writing *all the things* about ourselves, our nonprofit, and then what we really want in an ideal board member. We learned that when we can focus on the benefits that serving on our board will bring, we can change the way we talk about the position and attract our ideal board member.

Whew, You have done amazing. You’ve shown up and stuck with me as we walk through the foundation of recruitment that so many are missing. You’ve committed to not just filling a  board seat but to ensuring that the right person is sitting at your table with the incredible responsibility of representing your organization.

And now, you got it. It’s time to start putting all the pieces together in one ridiculously effective recruiting strategy. So hang in there for two more lessons and then I’m going to turn you loose and cheer you on as you start sharing your incredible mission with the right people who are equipped to help you make it happen.

I’ll see you in the next lesson to talk about reframing your recruitment message and using your “board voice”.
