One of the most important points we need to remember about the process of spoken communication is that the professional must separate individual blocks of information for the listener. The most obvious blocks of information that we need to keep separate our sentences. We keep sentences separated from each other by correctly starting and ending each sentence. Not doing so when reading out loud runs the risk of losing control of the spoken communication, and more importantly, confusing the listener. One of the most important points we need to remember about the process of spoken communication is that the professional must separate individual blocks of information for the listener. The most obvious blocks of information that we need To keep separate sentences, we keep sentences separated from each other by correctly starting and ending each sentence.

Not doing so and reading out loud runs the risk of losing control of the spoken communication, and more importantly, confusing the listener. The first thing we're going to cover is what to do at the beginning and the end of a sentence. There are three vital things that you need to do. And I don't mean stop and breathe. Many of my students like to call this the three golden rules. We need these rules because we've got to give the listener clear signals that we've finished a sentence.

First, we have to go down at the end of a sentence. Then we need to allow the listener to absorb the information they just heard. We do this by creating a pause. And finally we have to signal that we are starting a new piece of information by a energizing the beginning of the next sentence. You already energize your voice instinctively, when you see a person across a crowded room at a party and want to attract their attention, you can either shout their name, which will be a bit embarrassing. Or you can energize your voice by saying, Anna, I'll see you in a minute.

Another example is when you finish talking to a friend and they're about to leave. But you remember, there is something else you want to say. You will sound something like this. Okay, I'll see you tomorrow. By the way, I forgot to mention. In this case you have energized by the way Remember, the listener should retain 85% of the information.

Using the golden rules will help achieve this. In some parts of the world, it has become a habit to go up at the end of most sentences. This started mainly in Australia and sadly, is now becoming a habit in England. cannot be correct because going up at the end of a sentence means you're asking a question. If it's a statement, you must go down at the end of a sentence. Otherwise, it's very confusing for the listener.

Now listen to me demonstrate the only exception to the golden rule. Instead of going down when you're making a statement, I'll go up at the end of the question. Why did mending wine and women water? Why was one sec so prosperous, and the other so poor? So I just applied the only exception to the golden rule. I've gone up at the end of the sentence paused, and then energize the start of the next sentence.

Before I demonstrate the golden rules, listen to Linda reading these two sentences, and bear in mind that she is a complete beginner. The scene if I may ask you to follow me was now changed. The leaves were still folding But in London now not Oxbridge. And I must ask you to imagine a room like many thousands, with a window looking across people's hearts and vans and motorcars to other windows. And on the table inside the room a blank sheet of paper on which was written in large letters, women and fiction, but no more. So obviously, she did not apply the golden rules.

She didn't go down at the end of the sentence, her tone stayed the same. She didn't pause, and she didn't energize the start of the next sentence. Consequently, it is difficult to know where the sentence finished. Now I will demonstrate the golden rules that make up element one starting and ending sentences. You will notice that I count to three at the end of the sentence. I want you to do the same at the end of each sentence all throughout the course.

This will feel strange at first, but it's the only way to guarantee that it will become second nature. Once you finish the course. You should not have to count anymore. Because leaving a gap where necessary will have become second nature. When I apply the golden rules the first two sentences of a room of one's own sound rather like this, the scene, if I may ask you to follow me was now changed to three. The leaves were still falling, but in London now not Oxbridge.

Notice how I applied the golden rules go down, pause, energize. I went down at the end of the first sentence. I then counted to three is the pause, leaving a small gap between the two sentences. And finally, I energize the start of the next sentence. Now that you've listened to me demonstrate the golden rules as well as what to do at the end of a question. I want you to read and record the whole extract from a room of one's own.

Starting the scene, if I may ask you to follow me and ending picking up a notebook and a pencil. is truth So now we've covered element one starting and ending sentences and you've had a chance to practice the golden rules go down, pause, energize. it's advisable to practice each element on its own out loud for as long as you feel the need to. I suggest that you record every practice and listen back to it critically. So you notice how many times you've forgotten to follow the golden rules. You won't make progress unless you are absolutely honest about your mistakes.

Each element must become second nature before you move on to the next one.
