We're now going to cover element six, emphasize red flag words. I'm going to ask you to view words on a page a little differently to how you might have done in the past. I want you to analyze words. I know that sounds a little daunting, but you already do this. When you master the simplicity of this element, I guarantee that this will make your reading and general communication more interesting and will give you more confidence. And of course, your audience will find you more interesting and they will retain more information.

I'm going to ask you to consider another level of meaning that the words on a page convey I want you to Analyze words. This is an aspect that makes the difference between an amateur reading and a professional reading. At this level, a professional reader views the words as instructions from the author. To find these instructions, we need to be able to mentally take note of the red flag words and situations that the author uses to tell us how to read their book, play or script. This is an exercise which will help you to concentrate and analyze a little deeper. I'm now going to read this sentence incorrectly.

And I would like you to listen to my reading and have a think about why it is not correct. I'll explain later. I live in Paradise and outside my house as a public laboratory. Now what I've managed to do there is to read two entirely different words in the same way. Clearly, Paradise is somewhere Very special in a public laboratory is not. In this read, I ignore the instructions from the author.

So the correct way to read this particular sentence should have been. I live in paradise. And outside my house is a public laboratory. Of course, it's a bit of a joke sentence, but it does make the point. I should read a few of the sentences from the Polar Express and explain the red flag words. Notice that some of the words are underlined and a flat line.

These are the instructions from the author or certainly words that influenced you to make sense out of the sentence. These are red flag words that I want you to emphasize. On Christmas Eve, many years ago, I lay quietly in my bed. Christmas Eve is a very special time which is why we've underlined it, especially since it is many years ago because that evokes a sense of nostalgia for when you were a child. Remember the excitement of Christmas time when you were a kid? It's not like catching the train to go to work.

Many years ago, many is clearly numerous. If I ask you, have you been to London before, and you'd be in hundreds of times, you'd answer. Yes. I've been him many times, emphasizing the word many. When you get to quietly, remember that you're reading to a child, and reading and you're number five voice. So when you get to quietly, you would need to drop down to a 2.5 voice.

This becomes, I lay quietly. I didn't rustle the sheets, and I breathe slowly and silently. We have underlined these two words, because the instructions are obvious. You need to slow down at slowly and then drop down to 2.5 for silence. The last sentence is printed partly in red. The instruction here is faster and faster, which means we have to accelerate.

You are the person in the roller coaster which is a frightening situation. So you've got to sound scared and excited until we round the final corner and see a beautiful valley. Faster and faster. We ran along, rolling over peaks and valleys like a car on a roller coaster. And with a screech of metal we rounded the final corner and found us gliding gently into the valley. Now, this is not a normal Valley like you might find in South Wales.

This is a very special moonlit Valley. This Valley is paradise. So we are gliding gently, like a bird on a thermal silently and smoothly into this very Special Valley. Now I'm going to read the entire extract. And as you listen to me read, I want you to take note of the red flag words and notice how they are emphasized on Christmas Eve, many years ago, I lay in my bed. I didn't wrestle the sheets, and I breathe slow.

And I was listening for a sound. A sound a friend who told me I never hear a ringing bells have sent my friend insisted that there is no set, but I knew he was wrong. Late at night, I did hear sounds to not ringing bells from outside came the sound Have hissing steam and squeaking metal. I looked through my window and saw a train, standing perfectly still in front of my house. We climbed mountains so high, it seemed as if we would wait the moon. But the Polar Express never slowed down.

Faster and faster. We ran along, rolling over peaks and valleys like a car, a roller coaster, and with a screech of metal, we rounded the final corner and found ourselves gliding gently into a moon Valley. I want you to record yourself reading the whole extract from the Polar Express and remember to emphasize all the red flag words. When you're ready to record, press pause, press play as soon as you're ready. Continue So far in the voice master home study course, I've spoken about the six elements that are essential factors that make up a professional read. The next thing that you need to be able to do to read professionally is to combine all these elements and be able to do them all at once.

So in the next element, I'm going to cover putting it all together. We're going to practice blending the previous elements you've learned
