Many of us learned to use other pronouns when speaking, to not risk invoking too much feeling within ourselves. For example, say I was upset that a colleague, let&rsquo;s call them Jean, got a promotion and not myself. In seeking to try and discharge some of the emotion held inside through discussing, I might go to another colleague and start a conversation by saying, &ldquo;You know about Jean getting that promotion?&rdquo; If they seem similarly disgruntled, I could then begin to gossip or bad-mouth Jean, or the management, in some way.
