DESCRIPTION: Back in the early days of psychotherapy, in the 1920s, a student of Sigmund Freud by the name of Wilhelm Reich proposed the theory that childhood trauma, bodily posture, and adult personality were all related. He even went so far as to identify 4 different types of &ldquo;Character Structure,&rdquo; each relating to a specific type of traumatic event, bodily posture, and personality. Over the years, psychologists have updated his theory, changing terms and labels, but retaining its essential essence.
The Dreamer, or &ldquo;dissociating&rdquo;, character type, for example, is marked by a tendency to have an inner world dominated by fear and behavior of dissociating from the body when triggered. This type of behavior may begin whilst we&rsquo;re still in the womb when our developing nervous system senses something not right.
