The prerequisite for breath is posture so if you haven&rsquo;t watched that video yet, please go do it. The reason for this is that the diaphragm has to be at its neutral length in order for it to have full access to a contraction. I can demonstrate this by flaring my rib cage up and trying to breathe down into my belly. It's literally impossible. So start with your posture, then add on the breath.
The reason breath is so important is that it coordinates the core in addition to a ton of other benefits like calming the nervous system, massaging the intestines, and improving lymphatic flow. On each inhale, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, creating a vacuum for air to enter the lungs while the abdominals and pelvic floor relax and lengthen to allow for an increase in pressure as the abdominal contents are pushed outward and downward. The pressure of the abdominal contents stabilizes the spine. On each exhale, the diaphragm relaxes back into its dome shape which pushes the air...
