DESCRIPTION:
There are many phases to labor and delivery but I am going to simplify it down to two: active labor and pushing. During active labor, you are experiencing contractions that grow in strength and frequency as your cervix dilates and your baby starts to descend. Once you are fully dilated and the baby is fully engaged in the birth canal, the contractions change and that is when you start to have the urge to push with them.
There are also many aspects of labor and delivery that I am not an expert on so please make sure you take a birth prep class and consult your OB or midwife for the full rundown. I am going to limit my discussion here to positioning and pushing strategies that are best for your pelvic floor. I do want to note that these recommendations are based on anatomy and physiology but research has shown that the most effective labor and delivery is done in whatever way you choose to do it. Trust your intuition. What feels good and right to you is exactly what is best for you...
