Welcome back to chapter four of how to speak so that people want to listen, this is going to be quite a challenging chapter actually, because we'll be venturing into the dark side. That's what I call all of the things that get in the way of communication effectiveness, things that get in the way of your listening and receiving in the way you need to, in order to send more effectively, and in the things that get in the way of you sending effectively in the first place there, there are many of them. And as always, it's becoming aware. That's the crucial thing, because if you become aware of them, you can actually do something about them. We'll start by asking the question, why don't we listen? and answering that there are many many reasons in modern society why we stop listening why we've not listened now for some time as carefully as perhaps once we did.

We'll move on to the four leeches, these are crucial aspects habits if you like, which many of Have, I'm sure you'll find them in your life somewhere. And that again, by becoming aware of the four leeches, we can stop them from sucking the power out of our communication. We then go on to the seven deadly sins, which you may have seen in my TED Talk. Well, that was very short. And we have a lot more time here to unravel the seven deadly sins and look at the way they affect you in your life. Perhaps you're doing them to other people, perhaps other people are doing them to you.

And with all of these things, we won't be able to eradicate them completely. We're all human. However, you can definitely by coming, becoming aware of them. And by doing the exercises that I'm going to give you, you can reduce the impact on your communication. After the seven deadly sins, we go on to look at the agents of miscommunication that six things which, again, powerfully affect us one way or another and become tools actually if you become aware of them And finally we'll have a look at vocabulary and some danger words some words I really recommend you eliminate altogether from your speaking. So without further ado, let's go back into the office, get on with some slides and have an in depth look at the reasons why we don't listen
