Most people don&rsquo;t know it, but, in many states the law requires employers to provide you with a copy of your human resources (HR) file should you request it. Whether or not your state has a law requiring access to your personnel files, you should request a copy of it. Your HR file will provide you with your exact dates of employment and will also provide you with a copy of the initial paperwork you signed when you first joined the company. In addition, your HR file can also be valuable because it can shed light as to why you lost your job. Additionally, if you had great reviews during your tenure with your previous employer, those, too, should be in your HR file. That documentation may be helpful to you when interviewing for future positions. Be sure to make your request as quickly as possible, while it is still fresh in your mind.
