DESCRIPTION: To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect on my first day working at the rehab center. Sure, I had watched the dramatizations on TV and the movies. I’d seen how people in AA meetings would be gathered in ass-numbing chairs in a circle, either crying or refusing to talk. I suppose I thought we’d be serving terrible coffee in depressing, dimly-lit rooms.
The people I met and ended up helping – the best I could, anyway – were nice people who just wanted to get better. After years of training, interning, and education, I had expected this kind of experience. What I didn’t expect was how bad the outcomes would be. It wasn’t until many years later that I investigated the research on rehab centers, AA, and other approaches and realized something truly mind-blowing: They don’t work for most people.
