DESCRIPTION: The word “fitness” strikes fear into the hearts and minds of many people. Our conscious and subconscious minds still remember those difficult PE classes at school. As adults, we’re expected to carry on a physically active lifestyle on our own. Thanks to an industry built around making people feel bad about their appearance, we have lost the understanding of what it means to be fit.
For those in recovery, we need to adjust this definition. Fitness can be a truly powerful force in both maintaining and enjoying sobriety. It can be tempting to only think of fitness as something you do to try and lose a few pounds or finally earn that six-pack. But in this chapter, I want to propose a different definition that more closely represents what we’re going to accomplish together. Fitness should be thought of not as just a means of earning some kind of physical benefit, but rather as something that nourishes your entire self.
