DESCRIPTION: Remember the hit sitcom, Friends? After enjoying a very successful run for almost a decade, the show has seen a resurgence now in the late 2000s thanks to its syndication on Netflix. The show is a very unrealistic look at the life and times of five friends living in New York City. As a comedy, it worked rather well because it was a superficial example of what it’s like to be friends with people. The show is so popular because it romanticizes friendship. Friends allow people to live vicariously through the characters, imagining what it must be like to have a similar kind of support system.
Yet we all know the real world is different and much more complex than anything a 30-minute sitcom can portray. Once you add addiction and recovery into the mix, friendships can become complex and uglier. The show also did a poor job when it came to tackling the issue of addiction, showing it in an unrealistic light. In short, the show was not an honest depiction of life for 20 and 30-year-olds...
