Welcome to lesson four defeating the terror barrier. I hope you enjoyed the lesson on goal development. In this lesson, the focus is on how to overcome the fear that tries to stop us when we start going after those c type goals. Fear is a natural part of life. We've all experienced it from time to time, when fear strikes, we have two options fight or flight. In other words, we can either fight the fear or run back into our comfort zone.

For a long time I was in flight mode, a new idea would come up that would require some risk, and I would get scared thinking of all the ways that could go wrong. Instead of thinking of all the ways it could go right. A prime example of this is when I decided to join Toastmasters. For those of you who are unaware of what Toastmasters is, it's an international organization that helps people become leaders and better presenters. When I went to my first meeting, I was scared. I almost didn't go in because I thought I would have to present the first time I went Thoughts of fear filled my mind and a terror barrier popped up.

I had to make a decision in that moment. Do I let the fear win and retreat back to my comfort zone? Or do I take the risk and attend the meeting, I made the decision in that moment to fight the fear and go anyway, as I entered the meeting, my heart was racing. I was feeling anxious and my conscious mind was telling me get out of there. There were roughly 15 people at the meeting. And I felt as if they were all staring at me.

My mind was screaming, get out of here. Now you have to make a presentation to all of these people, and you know what you might fail. But I pressed on. It was then that the club president introduced himself to me and invited me to sit next to him. My fears started to calm down. He reassured me that unless I felt comfortable, I did not have to make a presentation or even speak, I could just simply observe.

After the first meeting, I felt more confident all of the fearful thoughts. I had had started to disappear. My fears were false. They were only thoughts. It has been just over two years since I made the decision to join Toastmasters. And since that time, I have won several speech competitions, have the opportunity to present at local colleges and co chair a local youth leadership program.

How can I let my fear take over me that night, I would have never had those experiences, I would have never made the friends I've made through the program. And I would have been stuck in bondage, letting my fears dictate how I would spend my life. Keep this in mind. As we reach for bigger and better things in our lives. fears are guaranteed to come up. It is at these crucial points that you can either give up or go forward.

But I know that if you're listening to this, you're the type of person who wants to go forward. So I wanted to share with you how to overcome the fear and break through that terror barrier. The terror barrier is a concept that when you're trying to change your life, there's a mental barrier that you must break through. You have to completely change the way you think about your life and what is possible. You have to break a lot of old habits and unconscious ways of thinking. When you first try to do this, your subconscious mind goes into a panic.

It will make you worry and convince you that it's too painful and it's not going to work. Here are the three ways that you can conquer your terror barrier. Number one, feel the fear and do it anyway. You already know that you're going to be scared to do it. So why not just do it anyway? Why not just try using that fear as fuel to achieve your goals faster, you'll realize that once you have embraced the fear and push through it, you will feel more confident in yourself.

And even if you fail that the thing that you were trying to accomplish, you will come out on the other end stronger for it. For example, when I first started public speaking, I was petrified. I would have my notes quivering in my hands. I would get dry mouth and I would fumble over my words. But I felt the fear and did it anyway. Now when I get up to make a presentation, more than half the time, I don't even need my notes, and I feel more confident, feel the fear and do it anyway, it's the first step to defeating the terror barrier.

Number two, expect the terror barrier. Now that you know there will be fear, you can begin to expect it. And the terror barrier when it pops up and you try something new. You can say, I'm not going to let this control me. I have defeated it before and I can defeat it again. In other words, now that you know it exists, you can take the appropriate actions to defeat it.

Number three, keep your eyes fixed on the goal. The whole reason this terror barrier is even showing up is because you're going for the C type goal because you're stepping out of your comfort zone and going for something big. Remember that on the other side of fear is freedom. Freedom to live the life you want. Freedom to have what you want freedom to do. Do what you want.

Keep your eyes fixed on the goal and keep moving forward. If you fail at something, take it as a learning experience of what not to do the next time. Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before creating the light bulb. He kept his eyes on the prize, and he succeeded. And I know you can too. Here's an activity for you.

Write out your goals. Do you remember from the previous lesson when I said that there are only two ways to change a paradigm that it can either be through constant repetition of an idea or an emotional impact. For this activity, I want you to focus on the constant repetition of an idea and write down your goals. This is best done on a small card, preferably a business card size or maybe a little bit bigger. Something that is small enough for you to carry around in your purse or your pocket. Did you know that a staggeringly low amount of people who create goals never even write them down, and an even lower percentage of those people carry it around with them.

Thinking Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill gives the formula for writing down goals and making them manifest. To summarize what he wrote, The basic premise is to write down what you want in the present tense on a card and read as often as possible every day. And specifically just before you go to bed, and as soon as you wake up, that means write down your goal, carry it with you in your purse or pocket and read it with full faith and belief that it has happened in your life. Why should you carry it with you, because when you carry it with you, every time you put your hand in your purse or your pocket, you will feel it and inevitably Think about your goal. Remember, it's the constant repetition of an idea that will make it stick. In our next lesson, we're going to focus on the key to bringing this all together, the power of faith and belief.

I'll see you there
