Okay, so we're going to carry out research on the 1939 register. Now starting out here on ancestry, as I say, I normally use find my path, just out of habit really. And you'll see that the 1939 register doesn't come up very easily on ancestry. So we'll have a look at that in a minute. If you I don't know if you can see this on my screen, I'm just popping over to find my path here. And you'll see hopefully, that at the top, it has a tab for the 1939 register.

So if you do use find my past, it's quite easy to use that. And you can either use the search there or if you've got more searches, criteria to put in, I'd recommend going over and using the Advanced Search. But we're going to come back over to ancestry. Now if you just totally want to look at the 1939 register and not do a search that's going to sort of bring up all kinds of things, I would recommend that you go over to count catalog down here. And you can just type in 1939 register in the title and it should come up there we go. So just click on that.

Now you can go over to, if you know for sure which county they were living in. You can go over and search just in that county here. I'm not going to do that. I'm going to just use the search engine Some the front page here. Now, I do have a problem with the 1939 register for my own ancestry because both my parents and both sets of grandparents were living in the Isle of Man at the outbreak of war, so I can't search for any of them. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to search for one of my grandmother's sisters, her younger sister, Dorothy.

Now she will she had a middle name of Benson, which was actually her grandmother's surname. And she was married to a man named Morgan. Now, middle names don't always come up on these kinds of records. So Dorothy Morgan could be quite a common name to research but luckily, I do know that she married a man named Augustine which is quite unusual. So we've got that as an extra search. criteria, which is very useful.

So when you are looking for these records and you've got sort of quite common name, it's very, very you know, if you have got a spouse or parent or sibling name that you know of that's more unusual, it's very helpful to use that. Anyway, her name was Dorothy, and I'll put in the middle name offense, just in case and married name of Morgan. Now she was born in 1895. Now as you can see, you can't put in location because the 1939 register unfortunately does not give a place of birth. But I don't know. Well, I fairly sure that she was living in Manchester Around this time, so we'll put Manchester we won't put exact though just in case now.

I said she was married to a nice man named Augustine. So that's going to be very useful. Um, so we will do a search and see what happens. Okay, we go. Now as you can see, that's, well there's there's two Dorothy Morgan's in Lancashire, both born in 1895. But because I had that extra criteria of the spouse name, then you can see exactly which one is.

So let's click on view record. So it gives you the transcript there. But also, of course, we can go over and view the actual record. Did you just wait for that to come up okay. Find out, usually on the 9039 register the surnames come first. So there we go.

You can see them there, Morgan, Augustine and Morgan, Dorothy. Now, if we look, unfortunately, the addresses is not shown. But if we go back to the previous page, there at number 14, you can see number 14, whatever that street is. Now, this just have a look up here where this black band is this is not actually in their household, as you can see, because they're at number 14, there's just two of them at number 14. But if you still see this black band within your household, it means that there's somebody in the household that is probably still alive and this is where the 1939 register maintains privacy of anyone still living how They work that out. I do not know.

But that is what happens. So here they are. And one thing that the nurses do 39 register has that. The other census records don't is an exact date of birth, which is quite useful. So you can see here that our husband was born on 30th October, and that's 1890 and my great aunt Dorothy was born 17th Of March 1895. And it gives a an occupation.

So it's assurance. Something, Agent I can't quite read that at the moment. I think it's an abbreviation something. Insurance society, I think assurance society agent, and Dorothy Morgan, unpaid domestic duties in other words, housewife You will find that occupation for women unlocked on the 1939 register. Although I do happen to know, I don't know when it was now or probably later in life that she actually had her own business. So it's just interesting to note that I'm coming down on other interesting notes here on other households here.

You'll notice and I, again, I actually don't know how they do this, but you'll notice some surnames will be crossed out and another name put in and this is where people have got married later on. So you will find people under their given name and their later married name, which is quite useful. Okay, so that's quite straightforward, obviously. I think they had had children, but I think that children may be here. and moved out by now. And if they had children, then you probably find some of them blanked out if they were still living.

And further down the page, can we see other households it does not give. You'll find any other census records it gives usually gives relationship to head of household. You don't have that here. But as I say, you do have the exact date of birth, which which is very useful. So that's a 1939 register. And I invite you to have a look at it.

Look at somebody you know, really well first of all, maybe a parent or grandparent and you know somebody you know where they lived, somebody quite easy to find them. See what you can find out about them.
