Okay, so I'm just going to show you a very brief baptism search. Just to give you an idea of what to expect and what different kinds of record entries might come up on here. Okay, so I'm going to do a search for my great grandfather, whose name was john, but he also had the middle name of Walker, which he dropped later on. So I'm going to, we don't really know whether he was born, baptize with that or not. So I'm going to go to birth, marriage and death. Now, you can narrow this down to birth baptism christening, that will get rid of any marriage or death records that might come up.

It won't get rid of federal registration as we'll see. You could narrow it down again, but Just for the purposes of this demonstration, I'm just going to leave it at that for the moment. So we're gonna type in his name, which was john, I've got to put in the put in Java because I know he did he have that name. It may not come on, and of course his surnames, but now he was born in 1848. Now obviously, we have to remember we're looking for a baptism, not a birth here, and baptisms can take place. Well, generally, they usually take place a few days after the birth, but in some cases, they can be much later.

And in some cases, you do see instances of people being baptized when they're much older, say 10 or even when they're an adult, but mostly, they're going to be baptized in The same year or the year after they were born. So we're not going to put in except that we'll just leave it at that. Now we know from the census that he was born in Birmingham Jail it's quite a big city. We don't know from the things to the exact parish and we also know that his father's name was also John's father's and I was also john Walker Bob but we won't but that in probably wouldn't come up in the census. I'm going to leave that his mother's name for now. My name was Louisa Lucy.

So that should be enough to get us started. Let's have a look and see what comes up. Okay, so this is quite interesting. As you can see the first three entries here oh john bought in net worth just says work shirt and the other to say Birmingham and then after that they don't look right at all that net one you might be worth looking at. But no, if you look at the hover over there and see the names of the parents come down there, you'll see the name of the parent was James. So that's not a transcription error.

That was, in fact, and that one is not the right date. So I think one of these top three, let's have a look at these. So that first one, it's baptism says here 24th of may 1849. And we can see from here, if we run over here, it's Birmingham Church of England baptisms. That's exactly what we want. And if we hover over there, we can see the name of father is john bot.

That's correct. And then Mother is Lucy. Now we know that the mother's name should be Louise and Lucy. And, obviously, you know, people use different names at different times. And sometimes people use the middle names, it's quite often happens. So if you do have an ancestor with more than one name, very often the middle name will be used for at different times, always look out for that.

So this looks right. But let's just have a look at these other two entries. Now this one, of course, it's the civil registration entry. We, we not looking at that right at the moment, but you might recognize that from when we searched before, and, and of course, the year is different. The birth was in July, or registered in June in that quarter of 1848. But the baptism if it's the same person was almost a year later.

Let's have a look at this third entry. Now this says 27th of may 1849. Let's, let's compare it with that phone that says the 24th and it's an but the names of parents are the same. So it looks like the same person just a very slightly different date. And this also gives you the baptism place of some marks in Birmingham. Now, have a look on this.

First of all, you will notice that on here it says select birth and christenings Now what does that mean? So let's go and have a look at that first. Now, you will notice first of all, there is no image on here and there's a reason for that if we go down to source information here and just come down here bit original data, have a look at this England person christening 1538 to 1975, Salt Lake City, Utah. Now, that means that this information comes from the International genealogical index, which I'm going to be talking about in a minute. But you will always recognize records that come from that index. And they usually in the results, say select birth and christenings, and you won't see the original entry parish entry on here, because it's a transcript.

But if you don't have the original, if, if the original entry isn't online, then this can be very useful. But if we go back and have a look at this, this certainly looks like the same. This is the actual baptism. As you can see, we can view the image so let's have a look at this. So this is the actual baptism register from the St. Mark's parish in Birmingham. And if we go to the date that it said, you can see why on one entry it said May the 24th and then another it said May the 27th, because the way it's written is a little bit confusing.

So, one entry is because the one of the index entries is put down 24th and another is put 27th. So, we now know that that certainly was the same entry. And we can see this is the what I talked about the post 1812 standardized format for baptisms after that date. And we see here there is a column, a column for the baptism date, and sometimes the birth date was put in there to the second column was for the name of the child, the third column, the name of the parents. fourth columns surname, and the fifth column was the address sometimes. In this case, you've got Barker street Woolies buildings, so quite specific.

In some cases, you might just get the name of a village. And then the next column is the occupation of the father and he was a bricklayer. And of course, we can compare that with the census. And to make sure that all these details tie up, and we've got the right person. The last column, you don't really need to know it's the rabbi whom the ceremony was performed. So unless your ancestor was that person, then it's not really anything you need to take too much note of.

So there you are. We just go back to results. There, you can see the three different types of birth or baptism entry. So don't get confused, know the difference between what's an original baptism, the civil registration, and then the international genealogical index entry, and we're going to go on to that next Cheers.
