In this lesson video, we are going to discuss how to do transformation using keyboard shortcuts. To move an object, you can use g for the shortcut. Let's see how we can do this. First, make sure the object that we want to move is selected, then press G on the keyboard. Notice the object is now moving following the mouse movement. To confirm the new position, you can left click, but if you change your mind and need to cancel the movement, you can right click.

So again, press G to move the object and then left click to confirm or right click to cancel. Now moving an object with a shortcut will let you move it within the viewport plane, meaning it will move based on your viewport angle direction. Now what if we want to move an object along the x or y or a Z axis? Well, we can do that simply by tapping the letter of the axis that we want. To use, for example, make sure the object is selected, then press G to activate the grab or do move mode. Then while in this grabbing mode, press and release x letter key in the keyboard, notice we have a red line indicating we are constraining the movement to the x axis.

If you press Y, now the movement constrained to the y axis, we can see the green line is now active. Pressing z will constrain the object movement to Z axis. And just like before, we can left click to confirm or right click to cancel the movement. Next is rotation. To rotate an object we can use the our letter key for the shortcut, we can see the rotation mode by default uses our viewing angle as the rotational axis. At this stage, we can then left click to confirm or right click if you want to cancel the rotation.

Just like the move operation. We can also constrain the rotational access to X or Y, or Z using the letter keys. For example, we want to rotate this monkey head using the z axis. To do this, first, press R to activate the rotation mode. Notice it rotates perpendicular to our viewing angle. Now if you press z, the object now rotates using the z axis.

If we press X, it will use the x axis and if we press Y, it will use the y axis. Next is scaling. to scale an object using shortcut, we can use the S letter key. Basically, the same concept applies here. We can constrain the scaling only to a certain axis using the letter key shortcut. So for example, make sure the object is selected, then press S to activate the scale mode.

Right now the scaling happens uniformly on all access. So the object does not stretch or squash in certain direction. If we press z, now the scaling happens only in the z axis direction. pressing X will make it happen only on the x axis and pressing y will constrain the scaling to the y axis. After this, you can left click to confirm or right click to cancel. Sometimes you need to move an object not in just the x axis or Y axis only, but both in x and y axis.

This is what we call plane constrain. So basically, we are not constraining to a single axis but to a plane defined by two axes at the same time. If you have the Move Tool active, we can do this easily by dragging these small squares. This feature is important for a lot of situations. For example, just imagine that this is a furniture object and we want to move this freely to a different location but still on the same floor. We don't want it to fly up or to sink inside the floor.

To use the plane constrain using the shortcut, you need to hold shift and then press the letter key of the axis that you want to deactivate. For example, we want to move this object along the xy plane. Essentially, we want to deactivate the z axis. So press G to activate the move mode, then press Shift z, because now the z axis is the activated, the only two axes remain is the x and y axis. As we can see, we can move the object around freely on the x and y axis, we're able to move up or down along the z axis. For the other plane constraint access, the same concept applies.

For example, to constraint to the x z plane, you need to press Shift y or if you want to constrain to the y z plane, you can press Shift x now we start movement you can also use the plane constraint for scaling. For rotation however, it is useless because a plane cannot be used as a rotational axis. For example, let's say we want to stretch this monkey head object along the x and y axis at the same time, press S to activate the Scale tool, and then shift z. Now as you can see, the object stretches along the xy plane only while the scale on the z axis remains unchanged.
