In this lesson video we are going to discuss about how to pick colors in blender and how to change the color picker style. If you click on any of the color boxes inside blender, you can see that it has this unique color picker, we can be wide the color picker into two sections. The upper area is where we pick color visually, and the lower area is where we can pick a color based on numerical values. For now make sure you have HSV active in here. The right strip here is where we define the value of the color or the brightness. You can see when I drag this up and down, the V value down here changes.

V stands for value. The circle is where we define the hue and the saturation. The more you go to the center, the less saturated the color will be. And the more you go to the outdoor area, the stronger color saturation will be, you can see the S value down here changes. S stands for situation. If you rotate the color selector like this, you can see the H value down here changes.

H is for hue, it is basically the color wheel. Okay. Now what is this a value here? Well, A stands for alpha. It is basically the opacity or the transparency level of the color. But you should understand that not everything affected by the alpha value.

For example, in the material panel, changing the alpha value of the base color will not make the object becomes transparent. The base color parameter in here only cares about the color information and will ignore the alpha value. Now, if we look at the lower area, we have three options here, RGB, HSV, and hex which is a short form of hexadecimal RGB and HSV are the color models supported by blender. While hexadecimal here is not an actual color model, it is essentially a compact version of RGB values. If you want to learn more about color models and hexadecimal values, then I strongly suggest that you watch the next two lessons after this lesson. I want this lesson to be as practical as possible.

In RGB mode. You can tweak the color by controlling the strength of the basic color components, which are red, green, and blue. But picking color or using RGB sliders like this is very hard. There is why you almost never see an artist uses RGB sliders to pick color from scratch. But for a slight adjustment, you may need it occasionally. For example, if you need to add a bit of red to the color, or green, or reducing the blue color component, for example, in most cases, you won't To have the H s v sliders active again, H is for U, S is for saturation, and v is for value or the brightness of the color.

The last one is the hexadecimal mode. In this mode, you can see the color in hexadecimal format. The first two digits is actually defined the red color, the second two digits is for the green color, and the last two digits is for the blue color. Because hexadecimal color values are compact and standardize. You can easily copy paste color values from blender to other applications back and forth. After you select a color to finish up, you don't really need to press any button, simply move the mouse cursor away from this color picker panel.

And that said, you might be tempted to press the Escape key after picking a color. I must warn you that you show them do that because if you press the Escape key then all of the Color preferences that you have made will get discarded. So again, after picking a color, simply move your mouse away from the panel unless you change your mind, so you need to revert back to the previous color. If this is the case, then you should press the Escape key. Sometimes it is just too bothersome to get the hexadecimal color codes from other applications. For example, if you have an image that contains the color you want to use, it is much easier to just pick the color directly from the image.

You can do this in render using this eyedropper button in here that exists in the color picker panel. After clicking this button, you can hover the mouse to any location in blender and then click to pick the color. Now in order for you to pick a color from an image, that image must be important first to blender. I know we have discussed about image editor or texturing But for a quick color picking, you can simply open the file browser you have in your system and just drag the image to blender. If you release the image on the 3d viewport Blender will place the image based on our current viewing angle. You can zoom in or out and read the viewport to find the color you need, then open the color picker again, click on the eyedropper button and click on the image then it is done.

After finished you can just delete the image object okay. If you use Photoshop before, you might already be more familiar with a square color picker type instead of the blenders default circle or color picker. Alhamdulillah Blender provides this type of color picker also. To turn it on, you need to go to the Edit menu, then Preferences. In the interface tab, you will see the editor section in here you can see that The color picker type option, select square as a V h from the pulldown list, and then just close the Preferences window. Now if you open the color picker again, notice now Blender use a Photoshop like square color picker, we can select the hue in this bottom strip.

Then you can specify the saturation of the color by clicking and dragging in the square area left or right, and then specify the value or the brightness of the color up and down. Okay, from now on, I'll be using this square color picker instead of the default one because personally it just feels more comfortable, but feel free to use the default or other type of color pickers available in blender. You can easily copy paste colors within Blender in other applications using hexadecimal color codes. But if you only need to copy paste colors between color boxes inside vendor This is actually even way easier. For example, I want to copy the base color value here to the subsurface color value down here. To do this, simply hover your mouse cursor on top of the base color box.

Don't click, just hover the mouse over it, then press Control C, the color information now actually already recorded in the clipboard. Next, just hover the mouse to the sub surface color box. Remember, you don't need to click anything. Then press Control V. And there you have it, copying and pasting colors inside vendor
