DESCRIPTION:
Hair structure
Cuticle: The cuticle is outside the hair shaft, it is made up of overlapping, transparent scales that protect the cortex. It is made of hard keratin and is usually 7-10 layers thick. The cuticle is what determines how porous hair is – these scales move more openly to allow colour from tint to dye the cortex of the hair when introduced to the chemicals within hair dyes/tints.
Cortex: The cortex is the largest and most important layer of hair and is also made of hard keratin. It makes up approximately 80% of the hair. Peptide, Sulphur, hydrogen and ionic bonds allow the temporary or permanent change of shape of a person’s hair. The cortex is a complex structure of twisted parallel fibres (similar appearance to a rope). All chemical and physical changes take place in the cortex due to the fact that this is where all of the bonds are found. The hair gets its colour from this layer as this is where the melanin is also found. When the tint and hydrogen peroxide is...
