DESCRIPTION: Oesophageal manometry is a type of test which may be used to assess oesophageal function in patients with dysphagia (difficulties swallowing) or severe acid reflux. It involves placing a catheter with a series of pressure sensors down the length of the oesophagus and into the stomach. By swallowing small sips of water, it is used to assess the speed and pattern of the wave of muscle contraction along the oesophagus as it moves food and liquid into the stomach. Normally, a wave of peristaltic contractions occur along the gastrointestinal tract to propagate food along its pathway involving relaxation of the upper oesophageal sphincter and lower oesophageal sphincter (present at the oesogastric junction), however impairments in the muscular tube or the regulation of contraction can lead to acid reflux from the stomach, chest pain or progressive difficulties eating and drinking.
