DESCRIPTION: Excerpt from &ldquo;Bryozoan Potluck&rdquo; by Victor Guan Yi Zhou Through a surge of reproductive energy, the aquatic invertebrate Bryozoa bloom buds of larvae that wiggle and bubble out from their own body. Oceanic eddies then whorl them outwards; their amorphous bodies reach out in an act of watery connection. Blurring the line between the self and the collective, Bryozoan bodies are a snotty and coagulating community&mdash;they are not pure, static, or singular. As they slowly pool onto the seabed, they grow colonies by aggregating their calcerous structures. These form box-like divisions which house individual animals with gooey tentacles. Slowly creeping and extending their zooids, they wave their tentacular filter-feeder systems to sieve food from the ebbing waves. As these crowds of tentacles wave around in the ocean current, they shimmer in a brilliant and sensuous display of collective eating.
