DESCRIPTION: Teleostei is the largest infraclass in the class Actinopterygii, which comprises ray-finned fishes. There are over 26,000 species of fish within this infraclass, most notably Salmo salar (salmon), Salvelinus (trout) and, Nematognathi (catfish). The radiation of Percomorpha into multiple taxa is shown in Figure 1. For Figure 1, the width of the spindle indicates the number of families within a superorder, which can be taken to estimate the diversity of the supergroup.
