Alright, in this video, we're gonna talk about HTML symbols. angle brackets, the ampersands are both used to designate code. So when you actually need to show those, you have to do a slightly different thing. It says we're talking about here, we'll talk about non breaking spaces, intellectual property marks, currency, quotation marks, and dashes and hyphens. So what's the symbol? A lot of times you'll need to show an angle bracket or other character that designates code.

So you need to have some way of showing that it's not code. And the way that you do this is through an HTML symbol symbol start with an ampersand and with a semicolon. Many of the common ones have been given a more memorable name, and are called HTML entities. There are many more symbols that you can use than the ones that have memorable names. And they have a number code with them. For instance, here we have less than and greater than, so it's going to ampersand lt semicolon.

So lt for less than and greater than n is going to be ampersand gt for greater than semicolon. ampersand since the ampersand not signifies the start of relations. symbol, we need to do something different with it. So ampersand is actually an ampersand, a MP semicolon. Now some, you'll see sometimes that an ampersand just by itself will also be picked up as an ampersand rather than as code. For best compatibility, I'd recommend having the full ampersand a MP semi colon.

But there are contexts where it might be okay or might work to just have the ampersand non breaking space. This is used a lot for just if you're one of those people that has to have two spaces after a line. The only way to do that in HTML is to have in one regular space and one non breaking space. So two words that are joined by a non breaking space will not break across a line break. So you can keep those two words together no matter where the text falls. It also prevents whitespace from being collapsed into a single character.

So typically, you would add like six spaces to space two things out though. Best spacing should be done With with CSS instead of with HTML, but if you for some reason need a few extra spaces, you can do the non breaking space a couple times. And that will come out as that number of spaces rather than collapsing them all into a single space. And it looks like ampersand nbsp is for non breaking space. Alright, so in the realm of intellectual property, we have copyright. So we have the copyright symbol which is ampersand copy.

There's also a registered sign, which is ampersand read. And the trademark symbol which is ampersand trade Express for us. The Euro is going to be ampersand euro cent. It's gonna be ampersand cent pound ampersand pound yen ampersand again, pretty self explanatory in those cases. Sometimes when you're working with content management systems, there will be some fields that don't handle quotation marks very well. The main reason that that happens is that the quotation marks get confused the code and cause it to end before it's supposed to.

So the way to get around that is if you can still ask Access the back end of the page, you can add quotation marks through HTML symbols. So ampersand Kwok qu o t will work for dumb double quotes. You can also use these number codes to add smart quotes or for left and right and smart, single and smart double. So this is smart, single quote left. This is the smart single quote, right, the smart double quote left and the smart double quote, right. There are three types of dashes in HTML.

The first is the hyphen, that's the one on your keyboard. It's the shortest of the three. And it's used connect to related words, we're pretty familiar with this. And to put it in the HTML, you just use the keyboard key for n dashes and dashes is slightly longer than a hyphen with the letter N. do use for a range of numbers or connection between two words, here will be some examples. in HTML, you're going to use ampersand and dash or the number is a 211 m dashes similar to an N dash. It's the With the letter M, and it's the longest of the three.

It's used to separate two related but separate clauses, or set up a clause within a sentence. So, having a zombie sitting whenever putting an HTML you use the ampersand and dash or at 212. Alright, let's take a look at some code. So I just have examples here to show you how these all work. So we have less than showing up here properly with greater than ampersand GT, ampersand showing up here, we have the non breaking space showing as a space. You can see there's actually two spaces there.

The second one being the non breaking space. We have the copyright symbol, we have the Registered Trademark registered mark. Then we have the trademark we have euro cent, pound yen, dumb double quote, smart, single quote left smart, single quote, right, smart double quote left Mark double quote, right, so then we have our three dashes. We have a hyphen, the end dash and the end Okay, that's it operational symbols. Now we'll move on to fragments and other types of links
