Hi, welcome back. It's Karen from the photography playground. I want to refresh your memory about the exposure triangle before we move on to working with it. At the top of the triangle we have shutter speed. shutter speed is the time the light falls on the sensor and it controls the way movement is captured. apertures the size of the opening and it's fixed in a smartphone camera.
It also controls the depth of field and the third value is the ISO. It indicates the light sensitivity of the sensor. It also controls the general sharpness of the image. fast shutter speed freezes it moving subject. slow shutter speed blur is a moving subject. Depth of Field is usually very large in smartphone photography.
It can become narrow when you move very close to the subject. Hello eyes Oh results in sharp and detailed photos. A high ISO results in fuzzy and pixelated images. Now let's have a look at how they work together. To properly expose for any given scene you need a given amount of light. This amount of light is called the exposure value.
The exposure triangle translates the exposure value into a combination of shutter speed, the aperture and ISO value. where it becomes interesting is how to achieve the exposure value. Because you know the three friends are a little bit like communicating vessels, a number of different settings can result in the same exposure value. Now, as you know in smartphone photography, we cannot control the aperture. We can however control the shutter speed and the ISO once you've learned to work with the camera app, it's actually a little easier to learn it like this. Because there are only two variables.
We distinguish two ways to work with the exposure value and the exposure triangle. You can get the exposure value the same by decreasing one Increasing the order the same amount and you can under overexpose, by increasing or decreasing one value, we call it exposure compensation. When you keep the exposure value the same, it's possible to choose between different combinations of shutter speed and ISO to get the same amount of light falling on the sensor. This gives you the freedom to work with the other aspects the shutter speed and the ISO control the way the movement is captured and the visibility of the pixels. Depending on what you want or what is necessary for the scene, you can determine your settings. For instance, a setting of 120 fifth of a second with an ISO value of 250 gives the same exposure value or the same amount of light as a setting of one 60th of a second and an ISO value of 125.
You see what we did, we used a slower or longer shutter speed to get a lower ISO. We let in more light through the slower shutter speed. We made the sensor a little less sensitive. I understand this can be a little confusing when you look at the numbers. It took me a while myself to get a full grip on this because both numbers seem lower. This is partly the result.
Of course, if the different ways to values are measured, the best way to look at it is buy more unless we give more time and make the sensor less sensitive. One 60th of a second is more time than 120 fifth of a second. And an ISO 125 is less of course then an ISO of 250. When you play with the settings, you give one value more than the other less to get the same exposure value. depending on what's most important you decide to give more or less time and make the sensor less or more sensitive.
