Hello, it's Karen from the photography playground. Welcome to this lecture about storytelling photography. Of course, every photo should tell a story. So you might wonder what is so special about storytelling photography, there are different ways to tell a story. You can do that in one single image like a portrait, or in a series of photos, like reattach. The kind of story I want to talk about in this lecture is a different one.

It's not a repetition. It's never a single image. It's a sequence of photos handling one single subject. Usually it's a personal thing. It revolves around individual fascinations. It's about setting free your creativity and following your creative impulses.

It's making the world your photography playground to the max. The key to this type of storytelling is consistency. And because of that, it makes it very suitable for smartphone photography. You have your smartphone camera with you all the time. So if you are encountering situation that fits your storytelling sequence you can take the shot. But what exactly am I talking about?

Let me show you. This is a sequence I made in Lisbon. It's the same place one of the many viewpoints in Lisbon at three different moments. It's clear it's the same place we can see that mainly through the shape and texture of the past. You could say that one photo of this place will tell a story about the people in the photo. For instance, the one in the middle is a photo of a man doing yoga in the park.

The man is the main element. Three photos of the same place start telling a different story. It becomes the story of that place, the park becomes the main element. The space is like a vessel where different stories occur. The consistent element is the place and the standpoint, the framing and the moments are different. This is the sad story of the pair that was never eaten.

I found this plate with the knife and a half eaten pair in the kitchen of the place where If at that time, it was beautiful still life of one of life's quiet little moments. I made a few photos of the pair so that it wouldn't be forgotten. And then I took it into my room because I knew there was a story. It actually takes quite some time before a pair becomes shriveled. I had it in my room for over 10 days. Yes, I know it's a little strange, but anyone who has been around me for some time knows for me it's not strange at all.

I have a fascination for the passing of time. And is is exactly that. In this little story, the consistent element is the context of the pair, the plate, the knife, the table and the light remain the same. And the way it is photographed, always close from above the plate completely in frame and the knife being cut off. The pair itself is to changing element. By photographing it every other day it becomes emotionless object that moves.

A lot of people make the photos the next sequence consistent Off foot shellfish. I know it's not the most original idea, but somehow I really like making them. To tell you the truth. I already made them years and years before digital photography, let alone smartphone photography. I can't seem to help it. But you know, the thing is that even with a simple common idea like this, it's the consistency that makes it interesting.

Because there are a lot of ways you can make a foot selfie. And these are all when I'm standing still feet next to each other in the middle of the frame. So the consistent element is, of course, my feet, but also the way I photograph them, put them together and I tell little stories of where I've been. By looking at them I returned to that place and more importantly, the specific feeling attached to that place and that moment in time. The last sequence is the concept of storytelling on a whole different level. It's a sequence of 12 photos of the same window.

It's the view from the window of the cabin in the ship that took me from Colombia to Portugal. crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 12 days was an amazing experience. I took a photo every day, it was a challenge to myself. Because basically the view doesn't change when you're in the middle of the ocean. It see all around for days and days. But I wanted to make 12 different photos from that same window.

Every day, I spent quite some time in my cabin to make the photo of the day because I wanted to make every photo count. The consistent element is the window and the way I photographed it. They're all frontal and the whole window is in the frame. The placement of the window in the frame is slightly different. The changing elements or the view and what happens inside the cabin, the light changes the drapes play part. And sometimes I'm sitting in front of the window.

These 12 moments of 12 days bring me back to that journey and evoke the feelings attached to those days in an instant. When you're working on a storytelling sequence, be aware of the consistency you can create consistent See in a few different ways, consistency of the place, the person, the way you photograph the object etc. You can underline the consistency in a post processing face. Now go out and discover your own fascination. Follow your creative impulses. Welcome them in your life today are the icing on the cake.

Happy photographing
