Introduction
The game of football in the contemporary world has become predominantly about zone defending. Players no longer place the same heavy focus on marking and controlling the offensive players they once did. I often feel that the individual responsibility for stopping the attackers in their tracks has given way to a focus on collective interaction, leaving no players accountable for stopping attackers in their tracks.
Is this the right way to behave if you are seeking personal and continuous development?
On a one-to-one basis, marking attackers was one of my most significant responsibilities when I played centre back in the Bundesliga. 
Every game presented me with a new learning experience as I came face to face with some of the world’s best-attacking players. However, I was far from daunted by this prospect. In fact, on many occasions, I felt as though I had a mental advantage over my opponent. I wasn’t sure why, but I was confident I would win the ball.
