In my formula for success found in module 1: Revisiting what success means to you, and in an earlier series of articles on core competencies, I wrote on self-direction:
Self-direction: The ability to identify and act on one’s sense of purpose in a chosen career and life path; a desire to continuously improve in one’s own performance; to be the best you can be in your chosen endeavor. 
The person who is self-directed tends to set personal goals, operate with a passion in their endeavors, be open to change, and have a strong sense of duty to her/his own goals and beliefs.
